Traditionally the Queen of Hearts might be associated with tea parties and nervous rabbits, but in Queensland she’s known for her passionate commitment to organ donation.
Mary Long, known locally as Mother Mary Queen of Hearts, has been organising the annual Cycle of Giving ride since 2006, raising awareness of organ and tissue donation. This year the event will be held on Saturday 20 February. “After my husband Mal’s heart transplant in 2004, we wanted to do something to tell people about the real difference you can make by registering as an organ or tissue donor,” Mary said. “We started the Cycle of Giving ride in 2006 and it’s grown to be a fantastic annual event. Last year we had more than 200 cyclists participate, plus more who came for the activities at the hospital. “This year we’re expecting at least that many cyclists, starting from Landsborough, Caboolture, Bray Park and around Brisbane all arriving at The Prince Charles Hospital. It’s wonderful to see the huge pack of riders come up the hospital driveway together.” The ride starts at 6am at Landsborough, stopping along the way to pick up more cyclists, arriving at the hospital around 10am. “We’re very pleased to be joined this year by celebrity guest riders Duncan Armstrong, the Vintage Reds and Lorian Graham. “For those who can’t participate in the ride, there are also activities at The Prince Charles Hospital,” Mary said. “The duathlon kicks off at 8am, and includes an 800m run, 400m swim and another 800m run. Individuals and teams are welcome to join in. “We also have children’s entertainment and the Irish Pipe Band, along with a highly competitive petanque game from 8am. “And don’t be late, or it’ll be off with your head!” said the Queen of Hearts.
